Japanese Kampo medicine, Hangeshashinto (HST), consisting of 7 herbal ingredients, is prescribed for patients with inflammatory diarrhea, gastritis, and oral mucositis in Japan. In particular, in cancer therapy, HST has been used for symptoms of diarrhea and oral mucositis based on evidence from basic and clinical research. Results from basic research have indicated that HST has antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antianalgesic, and antibiotic function, and promotes tissue repair. A randomized phase Ⅱ study of HST for colorectal cancer chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis has revealed that it is a promising drug for reducing the treatment period of oral mucositis. Research with high-level scientific evidence is required for improved and adequate use of HST in treatment of patients with digestive disorders. |
