[ Summary ] |
Esophagectomy with three field lymphadenectomy is the standard procedure for patients with thoracic esophageal cancer and has been as the curative treatment of choice for more than half of these patients. This surgical procedure highly invasive, and the incidence of postoperative complications is high. Thus, improving thee safety and outcome from such procedure has been attempted through measures such as minimally invasive surgery and the optimization of the regions when removing the lymph node. However, evidence to standardize the operative procedure, such as the regions for lymph node removal, the method of thoraco‒laparo‒scopic procedure, and the reconstruction after esophagectomy, is limited. Moreover, the safety of the operation and patient outcomes vary among hospitals because the operative procedure depende on the surgeons' judgment. Collecting evidence to establish standard operative procedures for esophageal cancer is needed. |
