[ Summary ] |
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is classified roughly into erosive GERD (eGERD) with esophageal mucosa injury and non‒erosive GERD (NERD) without esophageal mucosa injury. The treatment of eGERD with acid‒suppressant drugs including PPI results in an appreciable control of mucosal injury and symptoms, but the effects of these drugs on NERD are less, with approximately 20 % symptom improvement compared to that by eGERD. This occurs because both conditions are not necessarily similar ; however, the focus of treatment for both conditions is acid suppression. We have outlined the problems with PPI treatment of refractory NERD becoming resistant and various actions in this report. |
