[ Summary ] |
Recently, the Japanese national cancer screening program was updated, and the use of upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has been approved for gastric cancer screening. The guideline of the screening program recommends a duplicate evaluation of the endoscopic image by an expert in endoscopy ; however, it is difficult to retain an expert endoscopy staff and to develop a duplicate evaluation system. Therefore, an appropriate quality indicator for upper GI endoscopy without a duplicate system is desirable. Quality indicators for colonoscopy have mainly been reported from Western countries ; however, limited evidence is available about the quality of upper GI endoscopy. We discuss the current status of upper GI endoscopy quality indicators (e. g., gastric cancer detection rate, examination time, biopsy performance rate, number of endoscopic images captured, etc.) in this manuscript. Appropriate quality indicators for upper GI endoscopy would make it possible to improve the effectiveness of the cancer screening program. |
