[ Summary ] |
Esophageal stenting has been established as an accepted treatment for malignant esophageal stenosis. In some cases, however, patients with persistent stenosis following anticancer therapy are not offered an option of stenting only because they have received radiation. Recently, a wide variety of esophageal stents have become available. Some stents are specialized to fit each part of the esophagus. Mechanical properties differ from stent to stent. In order to reduce the incidence of complications, stents with larger radial force may be suitable for stiff strictures caused by extrinsic diseases, while stents with smaller radial force and smaller diameters may be appropriate for fragile strictures following radiation. It is important to understand the characteristics of each stent and to choose a stent appropriate for the location and characteristics of each stricture. |
