[ Summary ] |
Recently, left‒sided diverticulitis tends to develop as an abscess and its incidence has been increasing owing to the westernized diet in Japan. Small localized abscesses can be treated conservatively with antibiotics without invasive interventional radiology (IVR). However, patients with larger abscesses should be treated with IVR. Physicians and surgeons should pay close attention to patients who are treated conservatively. On the other hand, patients with free perforation must be treated with surgical intervention. Instead of Hartmann's procedure, bowel resection and primary anastomosis with or without a diverting stoma are possible options for patients with stable vital signs. |
