[ Summary ] |
Chronic inflammation of the interdiverticular mucosa in the colonic segment with diverticulosis is called diverticulosis‒associated colitis (or diverticular colitis). Many reports of this disorder have been published in Western countries. It is considered as a disorder that should be discriminated from inflammatory bowel diseases. Representative endoscopic findings include erythema on semilunar folds and multiple minute erosions similar to those observed in ulcerative colitis. However, diverse lesions are observed. Rectal sparing is considered essential for diagnosis. Treatment is not required in most cases. However, when necessary, 5‒aminosalicylic acid or corticosteroids are usually effective. Surgery is performed in refractory cases. Cases with ulcerative colitis (UC)‒like appearance were reported to present the typical pattern of ulcerative colitis during the course, and a relationship with UC is suspected. |
