[ Summary ] |
Endoscopic retrograde cholangio‒pancreatography (ERCP) was introduced in 1969 in Japan, and its use has spread worldwide. Endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) also began in Japan, and is now widely accepted as first‒line endoscopic treatment of bile duct stones. There have been many technological innovations in the field of pancreatobiliary endoscopy, such as endoscopic biliary drainage, balloon endoscopy‒assisted ERCP in patients with surgically altered anatomy, peroral pancreatoscopy and cholangioscopy, and others. It is expected that technological innovation will be ongoing in Japan. |
