[ Summary ] |
Surgery, chemoradiation, or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) are treatment options for patients aged >85 years with early esophageal or gastric carcinoma. ESD was conducted safely in 7 very elderly patients with esophageal carcinoma and in 40 with gastric cancer by the optimum management of underlying diseases. Additional surgery after ESD was performed in 16.7 % of patients with noncurative resection of gastric cancer. Five year‒survival rates for patients with esophageal cancer and gastric cancer were 100 % and 90.3 %, respectively. ESD appears to be safe and feasible for patients aged >85 years. |
