| [ Summary ] |
Capsule endoscopy and balloon‒assisted endoscopy are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal diseases. A large number of patients with small intestinal disease who suffer from prolonged illness actually exhibit complete recovery after treatment. Since capsule endoscopy has proven to be effective in the diagnosis of small intestinal disease, it is available for small intestinal examination through the Japanese National Insurance. Capsule endoscopy, which is a minimally invasive investigation, is also useful for identifying many conditions in the small intestine such as those secondary to treatment with aspirin and othernonsteroidalanti‒inflammatorydrugs (NSAIDs). The technology underlying capsule endoscopy is rapidly advancing, which has resulted in increased clarity of images and development of systems that allow interaction between the capsule and the external hardware. Such advances in capsule endoscopy are expected to have a significant impact in the field of small intestinal disease‒management. |
