[ Summary ] |
A number of cohort and casecontroled studies in western countries have indicated a high incidence of pancreatic cancer in patients with chronic pancreatitis. In Japan, a high incidence of pancreatic cancer in patients with chronic pancreatitis has also been confirmed recently. Chronic pancreatitis should be recognized as an important risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Surgical treatment for chronic pancreatitis and abstinence from alcohol have been reported to be statistically significant inhibitory factors for development of pancreatic cancer from chronic pancreatitis. If pancreatic inflammation is severe or acute exacerbation of pancreatitis occurs frequently in spite of conservative therapy, surgery for chronic pancreatitis may inhibit the development of pancreatic cancer. |
