[ Summary ] |
The preventive effects of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication on gastric cancer still remain controversial. A meta-analysis study of 5 randomized interventional studies failed to demonstrate a significant reduction in the risk of gastric cancer. Several studies indicated a significant reduction of cancer development by H. pylori eradication only in patients without any mucosal atrophy. In our recent retrospective study, H. pylori eradication did not significantly reduce the incidence of metachronous gastric cancer. Logistic regression analysis revealed baseline severe mucosal atrophy and a follow-up of more than 5 years indicated independent risk factors for development of metachronous gastric cancer. We thus consider that the preventive effects of H. pylori eradication for gastric cancer are greater in younger subjects without severe mucosal atrophy rather than in those with severe atrophic gastritis. |
