[ Summary ] |
Adenomas of the ampulla of Vater are relatively rare tumors in the small intestine. Ampullary adenomas seem to follow the adenoma to carcinoma sequence. This is one of the indications for resection. An indication for endoscopic treatment was a tumor which was limited to the sphincter of Oddi. Endoscopic ultrasonography (US) and intraductal US were reported to be useful for diagnosis. Endoscopic resection is normally performed with a polypectomy snare along with a side viewing scope. Prophylactic pancreatic stents are routinely inserted after resection. Complication rates were reported to be 10 to 20 %. Pancreatitis and bleeding were the most commonly seen complications. Treatment must be performed with cautious evaluation and informed consent. |
