[ Summary ] |
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) caused by hypercoagulable states is an extraintestinal complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Representative conditions include pulmonary thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis. Patients with IBD have a 1.5 to 3.5 times higher risk of VTE and a 2.5 times higher risk of recurrence than those with non-IBD. Patients with IBD who are hospitalized for VTE have a 2.1 times higher mortality rate than patients with non-IBD. Clinicians should always bear in mind the risk of VTE when conducting daily diagnosis and treatment. |
