[ Summary ] |
The prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased and obesity has become a leading public health threat worldwide. The number of bariatric surgeries performed has exponentially increased as well. According to a recent survey, over 90 % of bariatric procedures are performed with laparoscopic techniques. The most commonly performed procedures are Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses, followed by laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomies. Definite geographic trends are observed in the specific bariatric procedures being performed. A number of studies have demonstrated the efficacy of bariatric surgery for the treatment of obesity and related cormobidities. Our surgical techniques for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies are presented. |
