[ Summary ] |
Mucosal prolapse syndrome (MPS) is a chronic disease associated with lesions such as ulcers and protrusions caused by prolapse of the rectal mucosa. Excessive straining at the time of bowel movement contributes to the development of this disease. Patients should be carefully interviewed concerning bowel habits at diagnosis. Macroscopically, MPS can be classified as protruding type, ulcer type, and flat type on colonoscopic examination. The protruding type is most common. Lesions frequently occur in the lower rectum (Rb). The presence of fibromuscular obliteration in the lamina propria mucosae in biopsy specimens obtained from lesions provides the basis for diagnosis of MPS. Effective treatment requires the avoidance of excessive straining and the correction of bowel habits. |
