[ Summary ] |
Non-B non-C hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an entity defined as one without a link to chronic viral hepatitis. It has various etiological backgrounds. Obesity and obesity-related diseases, including fatty liver and diabetes, are considered to be major factors in the increase of non-B non-C HCC in Japan. The proportion of those with advanced disease was higher in non-B non-C HCC than hepatitis-C related HCC (C-HCC) because of ill-defined high-risk populations and lack of surveillance. As a consequence the proportion of patients who underwent potentially curative treatment was smaller and their prognoses were poor. However, the proportion of cirrhotic patients was smaller and the risk of recurrence after curative treatments was lower in non-B non-C HCC than in C-HCC. Therefore, elucidating high risk populations is the top priority to improve prognoses for non-B non-C HCC patients. |
