| [ Summary ] |
Crohnʼs disease is associated with a high risk of strictures as intestinal complications. Frequent surgical resection of intestinal strictures can cause short bowel syndrome and negatively affect patientsʼ quality of life. In recent years, endoscopic balloon dilatation therapy (EBD) has been aggressively performed.In our hospital, EBD is indicated when the following conditions are satisfied : 1) the presence of occlusive symptoms associated with strictures ; 2) an endoscope can reach the stricture site, and a balloon catheter can pass through the stricture site ; 3) no deep ulcers at the stricture site ; 4) no fistulae or abscesses at the stricture site ; and 5) a stricture length of 3 cm or less, with no marked curvature at the stricture site. EBD may contribute to a better quality of life for patients in whom surgery can be avoided. |
