[ Summary ] |
The standard treatment for resectable esophageal cancer in Japan is neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical resection. Morbidity rates for esophageal cancer surgery remain high and the postoperative quality of life is unsatisfactory. Although definitive chemoradiotherapy has been developed, high rates of late toxicity and issues concerning the safety of salvage surgery must be addressed. Surgeons, physicians, endoscopists, radiotherapists and paramedics should cooperate to provide patient care. |
