| [ Summary ] |
The first esophageal capsule endoscopy, PillCam TMESO (Given Imaging Ltd., Yoqneam, Israel), was approved by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004. It consists of an imaging device and light sources at both ends of the video capsule (11mm × 26mm). It takes up to 14 images per second, while passing down the esophagus.Recently, a second generation of esophageal capsule endoscopy, PillCam ESO2, was approved by the U.S.FDA. It is the same size as the PillCam ESO capsule, but has a wider angle of view and automatic light control. The PillCam ESO2 is able to take 18 images per second (maximum). With improvements in technologies and methodologies, the indications for esophageal capsule endoscopy may be come widely accepted as screening for esophageal diseases including GERD in the near future. |
