| [ Summary ] |
Although iodine chromoendoscopy is the most useful screening method for early esophageal carcinoma, the iodine staining method used often leads to pain and discomfort because iodine causes severe mucosal irritation. The Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) system is a novel technology that enhances visualization of microvasculature and mucosal patterns. However, there are few reports on the feasibility of using NBI endoscopy to screen for esophageal malignancies, compared to the use of iodine chromoendoscopy. In this paper, we demonstrated that magnifying endoscopy with NBI has comparable sensitivity, superior specificity, and superior accuracy, compared to iodine chromoendoscopy, in terms of detecting esophageal SCC or HGIN. Although our data did not demonstrate that NBI endoscopy was superior to iodine chromoendoscopy for all diagnostic screening parameters, NBI endoscopy is firmly accepted as a screening endoscopy method for the detection of superficial esophageal malignancies. |
