[ Summary ] Recent trends in the management of gastrointestinal tumors consist of early detection and curative endoscopic treatment ; therefore several endoscopic processing systems have been proposed to emphasize minimal changes in the color and structure of the mucosal surface in order to detect gastrointestinal tumors at an earlier stage. I-scan technology is a newly developed post processing digital filter developed by PENTAX, Japan. This employs of three types of algorithms, for surface enhancement (SE). contrast enhancement (CE), and tone enhancement (TE). SE emphasizes the mucosal surface structures and vessel structures by enhancing fine contrast luminance, CE emphasizes the mucosal micro topography information by enhancing fine micro topographic information, and TE makes possible detailed observation of fine mucosal structures, vessel structures, and pit patterns by changing the RBG tone balance of the conventional image dynamically. The TE mode consists of three individual modes such as TE-g for gastric tumors, TE-c for colonic tumors, and TE-e for esophageal tumors. SE and CE are suitable for screening endoscopy to detect neoplastic lesions at an early stage, and TE is suitable mainly for detailed examination of lesions which are detected through screening endoscopy.
