[ Summary ] |
Obesity is increasing world wide. Over 140,000 bariatric operations are performed annually. At this time, more than 60 % of bariatric operations are done laparoscopically. The most typical procedures are laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). The general indications for bariatric surgery are BMI ≥ 35 kg / m2 and related comorbidities, or BMI ≥ 40 kg / m2. Although at this time, a small number of Japanese institutes perform LRYGB, their use should be limited because of problems with early gastric cancer in the remnant distal stomach after LRYGB, which can not be found with normal endoscopy. |
