[ Summary ] |
Differential diagnosis of sub-mucosal tumors (SMT) is generally difficult because of various types of tumors observed in the colon and rectum. At the same time the incidence of colorectal SMTs is low. Both colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography of the large intestine are relevant in terms of preoperative high quality diagnosis of SMTs of the colon and rectum. Endoscopic surgery is commonly chosen for benign SMTs, while surgical resection with lymph node dissection is chosen for malignant SMTs. The indications for endoscopic surgery should be carefully considered since perforation of the large intestine is a life threatening complication. Surgical resection of the large intestine consists of two methods, conventional laparotomy and laparoscopic excision. Laparoscopic excision of the large intestine allows shortening of the duration of hospitalization, and early return to daily routines for patients, as compared to conventional laparotomy, because of it's lowered invasiveness. Laparoscopic surgery should be considered a safe, effective option for resection of SMTs. |
