| [ Summary ] |
Abdominal pain or back pain is often associated with chronic pancreatitis. These pains cause deterioration in the patient's quality of life. Main pancreatic duct strictures are often observed in chronic pancreatitis, subsequently leading to increases in intra-pancreatic duct pressure, which is one of the major reasons for the pain. We performed a cohort, comparative study on the efficacy of pancreatic duct stenting for the treatment of pancreatic duct strictures. As a result, pain recurrence after five years of observation, on average, occurred in only 15 % of stented patients as compared to 52.4 % in the control group. This was considered to be statistically significant. Recently, there have been some randomized controlled studies comparing pancreatic duct stenting to surgical drainage for the treatment of pancreatic duct strictures. Surgical therapy was considered useful. This paper introduces the data from our study and discusses recent reports. |
