[ Summary ] |
Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) was developed in 1980 to discover small pancreatic cancers. It is new used for precise diagnosis of digestive diseases. In 1992, the usefulness of EUS-FNA was first reported, and this procedure has been rapidly accepted in Japan. The indications for EUS-FNA include ; (1) differential diagnosis of tumors, (2) cancer staging, (3) histological evidence before chemo / radiation. The diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA has been reported to be 76 - 95 % for pancreatic diseases, and complications with this procedure have been reported to be lower than 2 %. Therefore, this type of examination is considered safe and highly accurate. Recently, genetic diagnosis has been performed using specimens obtained with EUS-FNA. This article, also describes EUS-FNA technique. |
