[ Summary ] |
The significance of transabdominal ultrasonography (US) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the diagnosis of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) is discussed and typical images from those modalities are presented. US plays an important role in the detection of dilated pancreatic ducts and cystic lesions in the pancreas. For further evaluation, EUS is mandatory due to its high spatial resolution. EUS clearly images neoplastic changes such as papillary projections and thickened septum like structures in patients with adenoma or adenocarcinoma. Therefore, EUS is crucial in determining treatment. Recently, several reports stressing that IPMN is a high risk condition of pancreatic ductal carcinoma have been published. When examining patients with IPMN, it is necessary to assess not only the dilated duct but also the entire pancreas. |
