[ Summary ] |
The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is extremely poor, compared to other malignant tumors. To improve the prognosis, early detection, at the smaller stage is important. The roles of ERCP in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer lie in the necessity of obtaining detailed images of the pancreatic duct including the branch ducts. Close examination must also be performed including that for cytologic and histologic diagnoses and lesions for which differential diagnosis is difficult. In performing ERCP, the operator must always endeavor to obtain high quality images of the pancreatic duct and he must be aware that some pancreatic cancers display little change in the main pancreatic duct. On the other hand, transpapillary cytologic diagnosis or biopsy does not necessarily produce satisfactory results in pancreatic cancer. It is very important to obtain sufficient tissue samples. There is a great deal of expectation for the future use of brushing cytology. |
