[ Summary ] |
Non-B, non-C (NBNC) HCC was relatively rare in Japan, constituting about 10 % of HCC cases. We compared 121 NBNC HCC patients (NBNC group) and 907 HCV-related HCC patients (HCV group). The proportion of male patients was larger in the NBNC group (76 %) than in the HCV group (66 %). 53 % of male patients in the NBNC group had consumed over 80 g of ethanol per day. The number and size of HCC at time of diagnosis were larger in the NBNC group than in the HCV group, suggesting that HCC tended to be found in more advanced stages among non-B non-C liver disease patients. However, cumulative survival after treatment did not differ between the two groups once curative percutaneous ablation was completed. HCC recurrence was less frequent in the NBNC group than in the HCV group regardless of alcohol intake, suggesting that NBNC HCC may have a more favorable long term prognosis compared to HCV-related HCC. |
