【 要旨 】 非可視光域の内視鏡への応用は,1950年代前半からすでに行われ,紫外線,蛍光,赤外線と短波長から長波長まで広い波長域で検討されたが,種々の技術的困難から実用化には至らなかった.しかし,それらの基礎的検討のうえに現在の発展があることを,再認識することも必要であろう.よって,本稿において先人の努力の成果の一端を概説する.

[ Summary ] Light rays in the non-visible optical spectrum have been applied to endoscopic use since the early 1950's.
A wide wavelength band, ranging from the short wavelengths to the long wavelengths, including ultraviolet rays, fluorescence, and infrared rays was examined to see if it was possible to put them to practical use. However, those trials failed due to various technical difficulties.
On the other hand, it must be recognized that the present stage of development is based on those early trials and research. Therefore, part of the results of the efforts of our predecessors concerning the application of non-visible light rays to endoscopic use are outlined in this text.
