[ Summary ] |
Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HPS) is one of the common disorders presenting abdominal pain in childhood. HPS is a form of non-thrombocytopenic vasculitis, presenting papular rashes, joint symptoms, urinary abnormalities and intestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain. In patients with HSP, sometimes fresh blood or occult blood is seen in the stool. Intussusception is rarely associated. It is not difficult to diagnose these patients with typical rashes on their lower extremities. However, it is sometimes difficult to diagnose patients having only abdominal symptoms prior to development of skin rashes. Clinical problem are present in around 30 % of the patients developing renal involvement (purpura nephritis etc.) within three months after the onset of purpura. |
