[ Summary ] |
Anal canal carcinomas are rare, and account for about 1 % of colorectal carcinoma in Japan. The majority of carcinomas are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Knowledge about the significance of anal lesions is important for the diagnosis of anal canal carcinoma. Extraluminal growth type carcinomas such as those arising in the anal glands or fistula are very difficult to diagnose, and should be considered for examination and biopsy under anesthesia for definite diagnosis. Treatment of anal canal carcinomas may be divided into histological types. Surgical treatment is initially performed for patients with adenocarcinoma. For patient with squamous cell carcinoma, a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy has been standardized, and abdominoperineal resection is indicated as a salvage procedure. |
