[ Summary ] |
The cytomegalovirus colitis patients seen were elderly, and had renal or hepatic failure with probable reactivation. Presenting manifestations included diarrhea, fever, melena and abdominal pain. Endoscopy showed erosive colitis with punched out or longitudinal ulcers. Biopsies revealed inclusive bodies in the inflammatory mucosa. With cytomegalovirus the incidence of colitis increased in the immunocompromised hosts. Diagnosis requires careful histopathological examination, CMV-PCR tests and CMV antigenemia. The benefits of antiviral therapy are seen to be useful. |
