| [ Summary ] |
We have evaluated the optimal surveillance intervals after colonoscopic removal of polyps (adenomatous or cancerous polyps) analyzing cases which underwent a colonic polypectomies. To avoid overlooking polyps, we should perform at least two consecutive follow-ups, with TCS (total colonoscopy) after polypectomies.
Based on this theory, we advocate a surveillance program, as follows: For cases which have less than 3 polyps or only adenoma at the time of initial polypectomy, we should perform one follow-up TCS every two years for the next four years, at least. After this period we should perform one follow-up TCS every three years for cases with less than 3 polyps and a clean colon status and one follow-up TCS every four years for the cases with only adenomas. On the other hand, for cases which have more than four polyps or polyps including cancerous ones at the time of initial polypectomy, we should perform one follow-up TCS every one and half years for the next four years at least. Afterward, we should perform one follow-up TCS every two years for cases with over four polyps in clean colon status and one follow-up TCS every three years for cases with polyps, including cancerous ones. |
