[ Summary ] |
Patients with simple fatty livers suggested a benign clinical course but patients with nonalcoholic steatohe patitis (NASH) gradually developed cirrhosis and complications, including liver-related death. The prevalence of obesity and diabetes in patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis was similar to that for NASH patients. Post-orthotopic liver transplantation nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and NASH can be seen in a number of patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis. These facts support the idea that some cases of cryptogenic cirrhosis represent burned-out NASH. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may represent a late complication of NASH-related cirrhosis and this emphasizes the need for watchful screening for HCC in patients with NASH-related cirrhosis. |
