[ Summary ] |
Recent advances in laparoscopic surgery have made it possible to perform various kinds of surgical procedures with minimal invasiveness. This paper reviewed the surgical procedures and prognostic results of laparoscopic surgery for upper gastrointestinal diseases. Laparoscopic surgery has already been considered as a first choice for surgical treatment of esophageal achalasia and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Laparoscopic omentopexy for perforated duodenal ulcers is also considered as a standard treatment, although there are some cases not indicated for laparoscopic surgery, due to the patients' condition. Concerning gastric cancer, laparoscopic local resection of the stomach for early cancer is thought to be a useful alternative for lesions which are difficult to remove with EMR techniques. Laparoscopic techniques have recently been applied to advanced cancer treatment, although the validity of laparoscopic procedures for advanced gastric cancer is still controversial. |
