[ Summary ] |
The number of routine X-ray barium enema studies is on the decrease since total colonoscopy (TCS) has becoming popular. In our investigation of the capacity of manifestation in barium enema studies in our institution, the detectability rate was 93.9%. The detectability on the left side of the colon, rectum, sigmoid colon and descending colon, was 97.6%. However, the detectability of lesions on transverse colon, ascending colon and cecum was 88.2%, 82.6% and 75.0% respectively. The detectability for protruding lesions and superficial lesions was 95.5% and 88.5% respectively. Due to poor pretreatment, lesions were undetectable. We can improve the detectability of barium enema studies by improving pretreatment and barium usage, and by using radiographic methods. It is therefor supposed that barium enema studies are useful for detection of colorectal cancer. This is especially so, when there are deformities in the lateral view in detailed X-ray barium enema studies, which are useful for diagnosis of depth of invasion. This modality has an important role in making decisions on methods of treatment. |
