【 要旨 】 癌治療は新薬や新技術の開発とともに変化発展してきている．そのような状況を把握して，現時点でもっとも妥当と思われる治療法を，その癌の病期別に理解することは必ずしも容易な作業ではない．癌の専門学会が各分野の専門家を集め，現時点における標準的治療を示すことは，現在診療を進めている現場の医師や，治療を受ける患者にとっても必要なことである．わが国では日本胃癌学会が癌治療では初めて「胃癌治療ガイドライン」を作成し，しかも患者向けの解説書も発行した．これは画期的なことであり，他の癌腫に関しても同様の動きが起こることが期待される．ガイドラインは学問の進歩とともに，改訂されるべきであり，学会の継続的な努力が不可欠である．

[ Summary ] Cancer treatment should be changed following the development of both new drugs and new technology. There for, it is not always easy for doctors to know what the standard treatment for cancer in their practice should be. The Japanese Gastric Cancer Association has published their guideline for the treatment of gastric cancer and their guide book for patients. Many other academic associations should prepare similar guidelines in the near future. Guidelines should be modified following the development of new medical technologies and other scientific advances.
