Costs related to management of disease in a population can vary dramatically depending on the strategies of investigation and treatment adopted. Economic analysis, provides an assessment of the probable costs associated with existing and new treatment strategies. In an era of increasing cost awareness, the results of such analyses are becoming increasingly important determinants of management strategies for peptic ulcer disease. The national insurance system now covers the diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in Japan. A number of investigatiors have demonstrated the clinical and economic superiority of eradicating Helicobacter pylori in patients who have newly diagonosed PUD, compared to maintenance therapy. |
