Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a recently developed technique that noninvasively demonstrates the biliary tree and pancreatic ducts, as does ERCP, from several perspectives. The HASTE-MRCP has been reported to fully delineate the main pancreatic duct and the extrahepatic bile ducts in virtually all normal volunteers and patients with pancreatobiliary diseases. MRCP has several advantages over ERCP. MRCP is quite safe and is not operator dependent. MRCP demonstrates ducts proximal to a severe obstruction. MRCP completely depicts pancreatic cystic lesions regardless of pancreatic ductal communication or mucin. MRCP is not limited in patients with altered pancreatobiliary anatomy due to surgical treatment. MRCP can be used as a noninvasive screening method for pancreatic diseases. |
