[ Summary ] |
In 1983, P. G. Isaacson, and D. Wright, proposed a new entity, malignant lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Because primary gastrointestinal lymphoma is regarded as a type of tumor, originating from follicular center cells (FCC) and Mediterranean lymphoma (MTL), which share a common histogenesis with MALT. In this chapter, the pathological point of view, the historical changes, the disease concept and the histological classification of the MALT lymphoma which are presently accepted were described. We also referred to the recent problems as sociated with MALT lymphoma. To clarify the biological characteristics of MALT lymphoma, an accumulation of the clinicopathological knowledge, including the effects of eradication of Helicobacter pylori bacteria and further cytogenetical investigations are needed. |
