Proton pump inhibitors have many advantages in the treatment of peptic ulcers, since they have a much more potent inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion than H2 receptor antagonists, resulting in the prompt disappearance of subjective symptoms such as pain, and resulting in quick healing of ulcers.
They are expected to become an ideal drugs of first choice in the treatment of peptic ulcers. In the future, major changes should take place in therapeutic strategies for peptic ulcers with the switch of H2 receptor antagonists to OTC(over the counter) status, and the expansion of therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori covered by health insurance. |
