[ Summary ] |
The epidemiological link between cancer and alcoholism indicates that excessive alcohol intake increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Recently,it has been suggested that ethanol has a specific role in the development of HCC.The possible mechanisms whereby a1cohol abuse promotes the development of HCC, are hepatocellular injury from alcoho1,an increase in the conversion of carcinogens by the induction of microsomal enzymes., due to chronic ethano1 cons umption, the promoting action of ethanol itself, and nutritional deficiencies particularly of vitamin A, and presence of methyl radicals. However, there is little experimental evidence to support the direct pathogenic role of alcohol abuse in the development of HCC. |
