[ Summary ] |
The incidence of ischemic enteritis, which is an ischemic disease of the intestines without vascular occlusion, is high in dialysis patients. The prognosis for necrotizing ischemic enteritis is particularly dismal. Early diagnosis and early treatment are important. CT scans are very useful for diagnosis of this condition. Once diagnosis of necrotizing ischemic enteritis is made, emergent resection of gangrenous intestines is necessary and proximal diversion is recommended. The intestinal tissue should be removed until the margins appear normal. Concerns about remaining or ongoing ischemia determine the need for laparotomy. Additional resection of ischemic intestine should be performed, when necessary. |
