[ Summary ] |
In case of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), where the patient is undergoing hemodialysis, nasal CPAP is the primary choice of treatment, and other medical treatments are secondary. Acetazolamide is a primary pharmacological choice in SAS cases, and is the only drug which can be prescribed within Japan's medical insurance system. However, this medicine is a diuretic and cannot be given to these patients. Theophylline can treat patients with central SAS, associated with heart failure. Thyroxine is effective for patients with SAS caused by hypothyroidism. Furthermore, progesterone and antidepressants are applicable for those patients with SAS, who are receiving hemodialysis. However, there are few reports of medical treatment of SAS in patients receiving hemodialysis. We must take care to treat SAS in patients who are undergoing hemodialysis. |
