[ Summary ] We described the practice of informed consent for the patient concerning colonoscopic examination and treatment in our hospital.
We use separate forms for informed consent : One is for colonoscopic examination, the other for colonoscopic treatment.
First, for colonoscopy we inform them as follows : (1) The necessity and methods of colonoscopic procedures. (2) The safety and complication rates. (3) Adverse effects of premedication and / or sedation. (4) Medication required for procedure-related adverse effects. Subsequently, we schedule the examination when the patient consents with their signature on the documents. The original sheet is given to the patient and the copy filed in our medical records.
Second, as for colonoscopic treatment, the practice of informed consent is essentially the as same as the above descriptions for colonoscopy. It is important to manage the anticoagulants or antiplatelets given to prevent the risk of bleeding during treatment.
We should seriously consider developing good understanding and communication with patients through informed consent to avoid or settle medical disputes.
