| [ Summary ] |
Mucosal healing has been recognized as a treatment target for ulcerative colitis (UC). With the development of new agents, the treatment options for UC are increasing year by year. Under these circumstances, the development of more objective and feasible procedures to assess mucosal healing is needed. Chromoendoscopy followed by magnifying NBI (narrow band imaging) observation was evaluated for its efficiency to assess the histological activity or clinical prognosis of UC. The detectability of tiny erosion or regenerated mucosal gland structure by magnifying chromoendoscopy and that of vessel pattern by magnifying NBI is superior to the detectability by conventional white light observation. The development of clinically applicable procedures for specific endoscopic findings is an important issue. Therefore, high-quality clinical trials in this field are needed. |
