| [ Summary ] |
The MEFV gene has been identified as being responsible for familial Mediterranean fever. It has been considered that involvement with intestinal lesions is a rare characteristic because the main symptom of this disease is polyserositis. However, several papers relating the involvement of intestinal lesions to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with MEFV gene mutations have been published. In particular, MEFV gene mutations in association with Crohn's disease have been as indicated possibly being disease-modifying gene. However, the function of MEFV gene have not been completely elucidated. Therefore, careful consideration, including basic studies are needed to assess the association between IBD and MEFV gene. |
