We investigated the relationship between stereomicroscopic pit patterns and histological structures in superficial depressed-type colorectal tumors to assess the possibility of diagnosing the level of invasion by the pit patterns. VA-type pit lesions were found to be sm massive carcinomas ; VI-type lesions included both m carcinomas and sm carcinomas ranging from sml to sm3 levels ; lesions with pit patterns other than VA and VI types were frequently limited to the mucosa, and even if they invaded the sm, these lesions were mostly limited to sm1. Features of the histological structure of the lesions with VA-type pits included a high degree of divergence of tumor glands and DR at the superficial layer of the lesions. Features of the histological structure of the lesions with VI-type pits included a high degree of divergence of tumor glands and no decrease in gland density. Features of the histological structure of the lesions with pit patterns other than VA and VI-type pits were such that the structure was made up of ducts with either slight divergence, or none at all, and no DR. These findings show that stereomicroscopic analysis of the pit patterns of the superficial depressedtype colorectal tumors is useful for diagnosing the level of invasion. |
