[ Summary ] |
Intestinal Behçet's disease and simple ulcer are idiopathic diseases characterized by ileocecal ulceration. Macroscopically, large, rounded penetrating ulcers often exhibit flask-shaped morphology with clear margins. Histologically, these ulcers have a non-specific inflammatory appearance. They have a floor which is covered by a layered structure composed of necrotic tissue, granulation tissue, and fibrous tissue. Granulomas are absent. The adjacent ileal mucosa appears almost entirely normal. Crohn's disease, tuberculosis, ischemic lesion, drug-induced enteropathy, and other forms of infectious enteritis must be distinguished from intestinal Behçet's disease or simple ulcers. The histological features are not specific, however, and one must rely on clinical information about extra-intestinal manifestations to establish a proper diagnosis. |
